US Federal Contract Spending
What our government spends vs. how much we talk about it. Two important aspects that help define and shape our society. Most Americans know that our government spends an insane amount of our tax dollars on defense, but how do you show just how much we spend compared to all other areas in our country? We wanted to use a minimal approach with no labeling necessary. The design says it all and shows what almost 70% of Federal contract spending going to defense looks like com paired to all other agencies (Education get’s around 1%).

New startup uses Internet to predict the future
Recorded Future uses the term “temporal analytics” to describe what it does. It extracts information including entities, events and the time that these events occur from the thousands of news publications, blogs, niche sources, trade publications, government web sites, financial databases and more that the company continually scans. Using this information the company says it is able to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents, not only in the past and present, but also in the future.
750words.com
Morning pages are three pages of writing done every day, typically encouraged to be in “long hand”, typically done in the morning, that can be about anything and everything that comes into your head. It’s about getting it all out of your head, and is not supposed to be edited or censored in any way. The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, that it will help clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day.
The Design Matrix
Using the principles of information design as a sales tool:
Design matrices are powerful tools for determining the path of the website design process, because: they force you to determine two design attributes to focus on; they build consensus within a team; they guide the clients’ perception of competitors; and, most importantly, they lead to differentiated website designs.
The State of the Radii
Why double-checking for accuracy in infographics is vital.
The ratio of the diameters is 2.45, which means the ratio of the areas is going to be (2.45)^2 or 6.00. But the ratio of America’s GDP to China’s GDP (14.6T/5.7T) is only 2.56! The US circle is too big! What’s the progressive propaganda machine trying to sell us here?!
Visualizing the Value of Nature Challenge
In collaboration with TEEB, we would like to challenge the world’s design community to produce cutting-edge, informative visualizations to help us understand the value of nature. Understanding the costs of biodiversity loss through data visualization may force us to reassess what we value and potentially change the way we look at nature.
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) is a major scientific study into the global economic costs of ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss. It was initiated by the G8 + 5, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, and is supported by the European Commission, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Norway, Japan and Sweden. The study has drawn together knowledge from experts in science, economics, business, development, and policy to identify and develop practical actions in response to the growing evidence of the impacts of biodiversity loss.
The winner will receive US$ 5,000 provided by TEEB.
