Map of New York City’s ethnic neighborhoods
New York has evolved into a greater crucible of race and ethnicity today than it was back then, but the city also remains very much a mosaic — a variegated montage of neighborhoods in which certain groups predominate.

The Stock Market in 2010 as a Song
Built by CNN creative director Bård Edlund, the Dow Piano render’s each day’s closing level as a note, spanning three octaves. The higher the pitch, the higher the level was. Additionally, a higher audible volume maps to a higher trading volume. Thus, a panicky, furious trading day translates to a loud, low note; a loud, keening flourish is a good day; and more muted notes represent days when trading was sluggish.

13 of the Year’s Best Infographics
Nearly every day over the past year we’ve brought you our Infographic of the Day—the best designed, most interesting chart out there (that we saw!), chosen from a brimming sea of thousands. And among the hundreds that have made the cut, several have stood out. Some are remarkable simply for their design; others because of what they say about the world we live in. And still others are notable because they point to trends in how data will soon inform, enhance and impact our lives

200 countries, 200 years, 4 minutes

Hans Rosling’s famous lectures combine enormous quantities of public data with a sport’s commentator’s style to reveal the story of the world’s past, present and future development. Now he explores stats in a way he has never done before - using augmented reality animation. In this spectacular section of ‘The Joy of Stats’ he tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers - in just four minutes. Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine
